It is narrated from Abu al-Mutawakkil al-Naji that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) to a well of the polytheists to draw water from it. Around that well were three rows of guards watching over it. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) filled his waterskins and then turned back, and when he reached the first row, the guards seized him. Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) said (as a stratagem): "Let me go, for I am only drawing water for your own companions." So they let him go. Then when he passed a second time, they seized him again and did the same with him. Then he passed a third time, and they seized him again and treated him as before. Then, when those enemies pressed him hard and wanted to force him to utter words of disbelief, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a cavalry detachment, which rescued him safely. So this noble verse was revealed concerning him: "except one who is compelled while his heart is at peace with faith" [Surah al-Nahl: 106].
The chain of this narration contains Isma'il bin Muslim al-Makki, a weak narrator; however, the basis of this event exists in other reliable supporting evidence.
