Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 3483 — The writing of the mushaf

It is narrated from Hani' al-Barbari, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), that when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was having the copies of the Qur'an (masahif) prepared, the scribes had some doubt about three verses. So they wrote those verses on the shoulder blade of a goat and sent me to Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b and Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with them both). I went to the two of them and handed the bone to Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him). He read it and found written there: "La tabdila lil-khalqi dhalika al-dinu al-qayyim", so with his own hand he erased one of the two lams and wrote it as "There is no change in the creation of Allah" [Surah al-Rum: 30]. The narrator said that Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) also found written there: "Unzur ila ta'amika wa sharabika lam yatasanna", so he erased the nun and made it "lam yatasannah (it has not changed with the years)" [Surah al-Baqarah: 259]. Then he read from it: "Fa-amhil al-kafirin", so he erased the alif and wrote it as "So give respite to the disbelievers (fa-mahhil al-kafirin)" [Surah al-Tariq: 17]. The narrator said: My belief is that he said it in this way. Then Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) also examined the writing, after which I took it back to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and they recorded those verses in the masahif in this (corrected) form.
This chain is da'if (weak).
