عَلَى حَرْفٍ وَاحِدٍ .
قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ مُغِيرَةَ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ : إِنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا سَمِعَ رَجُلًا يَقُولُ : الْحَرْفُ الْأَوَّلُ ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا : ( مَا ) الْحَرْفُ الْأَوَّلُ ؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ : يَا ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ إِنَّ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ بَعَثَ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ مُعَلِّمًا إِلَى أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ ، فَحَفِظُوا قِرَاءَتَهُ ، فَغَيَّرَ عُثْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ الْقِرَاءَةَ ، فَهُمْ يَدْعُونَهُ الْحَرْفَ الْأَوَّلَ ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا : إِنَّهُ لَآخِرُ حَرْفٍ عَرَضَ بِهِ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ .
قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ مُغِيرَةَ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ : إِنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا سَمِعَ رَجُلًا يَقُولُ : الْحَرْفُ الْأَوَّلُ ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا : ( مَا ) الْحَرْفُ الْأَوَّلُ ؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ : يَا ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ إِنَّ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ بَعَثَ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ مُعَلِّمًا إِلَى أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ ، فَحَفِظُوا قِرَاءَتَهُ ، فَغَيَّرَ عُثْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ الْقِرَاءَةَ ، فَهُمْ يَدْعُونَهُ الْحَرْفَ الْأَوَّلَ ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا : إِنَّهُ لَآخِرُ حَرْفٍ عَرَضَ بِهِ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard a man saying "al-harf al-awwal" (the first reading). So Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked: "What is this first reading?" The man said: "O Ibn Abbas, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) as a teacher to the people of Kufah, and the people there learned his reading and memorised it. Then when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) changed the reading (to one particular form through the master copy of the Mushaf), those people began to call it 'the first reading.'" At this Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), making the reality clear, said: "In fact, it is that very last reading which Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) reviewed with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for the final time (in the year of his passing)."
