عَلَيْهِمُ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ
قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ : حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، ثَنَا أَبُو رَافِعٍ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ رُومَانَ ، عَمَّنْ أَخْبَرَهُ ، عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : دَخَلْتُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَإِذَا أَنَا بِرَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَالِسًا وَحْدَهُ فَقُمْتُ أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ وَهُوَ لَا يَرَانِي وَأَقُولُ مَا خَلَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هَكَذَا وَحْدَهُ إِلَّا وَهُوَ عَلَى حَاجَةٍ أَوْ عَلَى وَحْيٍ ، فَجَعَلْتُ أُؤَامِرُ نَفْسِي أَنْ آتِيَهُ ، فَأَبَتْ نَفْسِي إِلَّا أَنْ آتِيَهُ ، فَجِئْتُ فَسَلَّمْتُ ثُمَّ جَلَسْتُ ، فَجَلَسْتُ طَوِيلًا لَا يَلْتَفِتُ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَيَّ وَلَا يُكَلِّمُنِي ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : قَدْ كَرِهَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُجَالَسَتِي ، ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَيَّ فَقَالَ : " يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ " ، فَقُلْتُ : لَبَّيْكَ وَسَعْدَيْكَ . قَالَ : " أَرَكَعْتَ الْيَوْمَ ؟ " قُلْتُ : لَا ، قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " قُمْ فَارْكَعْ " ، فَقُمْتُ فَرَكَعْتُ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ تَعَالَى ، ثُمَّ عُدْتُ فَجَلَسْتُ ، فَمَكَثَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ طَوِيلًا لَا يُكَلِّمُنِي ، فَقُلْتُ : قَدْ كَرِهَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُجَالَسَتِي ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَيَّ فَقَالَ : " يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ " ، قُلْتُ : لَبَّيْكَ وَسَعْدَيْكَ . قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اسْتَعِذْ بِاللهِ مِنْ شَرِّ شَيَاطِينِ الْإِنْسِ وَالْجِنِّ " ، فَقُلْتُ : بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي ، وَلِلْإِنْسِ شَيَاطِينُ ؟
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَلَيْسَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَقُولُ شَيَاطِينَ الإِنْسِ وَالْجِنِّ يُوحِي بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ الْآيَةَ .
ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَيَّ فَقَالَ : يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ ، قُلْتُ : لَبَّيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ كَلِمَةً هِيَ كَنْزٌ مِنْ كُنُوزِ الْجَنَّةِ ؟ " قُلْتُ : بَلَى ، بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : قُلْ : لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ " ثُمَّ أَصَرَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا يَتَكَلَّمُ حَتَّى طَالَ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ ، فَأْتَنَفْتُ الْحَدِيثَ فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، إِنَّكَ أَمَرْتَنِي بِالصَّلَاةِ ، فَمَا الصَّلَاةُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : خَيْرٌ مَوْضُوعٌ ، فَمَنْ شَاءَ اسْتَقَلَّ ، وَمَنْ شَاءَ اسْتَكْثَرَ . قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، فَمَا الصِّيَامُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : فَرْضٌ مُجْزِئٌ . قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، فَمَا الصَّدَقَةُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَضْعَافٌ مُضَاعَفَةٌ ، وَعِنْدَ اللهِ الْمَزِيدُ . " قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، فَأَيُّ الْعَمَلِ أَفْضَلُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِيمَانٌ بِاللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ، وَجِهَادٌ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ تَعَالَى " قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، فَأَيُّ الشُّهَدَاءِ أَفْضَلُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مَنْ أُهَرِيقَ دَمُهُ ، وَعُقِرَ جَوَادُهُ " قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، فَأَيُّ الرِّقَابِ أَفْضَلُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَغْلَاهَا ثَمَنًا ، وَأَنْفَسُهَا عِنْدَ أَهْلِهَا .
قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، أَيُّ الصَّدَقَةِ أَفْضَلُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : جُهْدٌ مِنْ مُقِلٍّ ، وَسِرٌّ إِلَى فَقِيرٍ " قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، فَإِنْ لَمْ أَجِدْ مَا أَتَصَدَّقُ بِهِ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : تُعِينُ ضَعِيفًا ، أَوْ تَصْنَعُ لِأَخْرَقَ . قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، فَإِنْ لَمْ أَسْتَطِعْ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : فَتَكُفُّ هَذَا - وَأَشَارَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى لِسَانِهِ - فَإِنَّهَا صَدَقَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ يَتَصَدَّقُ بِهَا الْمَرْءُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ . قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، أَيُّمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ أَعْظَمُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : آيَةُ الْكُرْسِيِّ ، وَتَدْرِي مَا مَثَلُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ فِي الْكُرْسِيِّ ؟ قُلْتُ : لَا ، إِلَّا أَنْ تُعَلِّمَنِي مِمَّا عَلَّمَكَ اللهُ تَعَالَى ، قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَثَلُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ فِي الْكُرْسِيِّ إِلَّا كَحَلْقَةٍ مُلْقَاةٍ فِي فَلَاةٍ ، وَإِنَّ فَضْلَ الْكُرْسِيِّ عَلَى السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ كَفَضْلِ الْفَلَاةِ عَلَى تِلْكَ الْحَلْقَةِ قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، كَمْ كَانَ الْأَنْبِيَاءُ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " كَانُوا مِائَةَ أَلْفٍ وَأَرْبَعَةً وَعِشْرِينَ أَلْفًا " قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، وَكُلُّهُمْ كَانُوا رُسُلًا ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَا ، كَانَ الرُّسُلُ مِنْهُمْ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ وَثَلَاثَمِائَةِ رَجُلٍ " قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، فَأَيُّهُمْ كَانَ أَوَّلَ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " آدَمُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ " قُلْتُ : وَنَبِيٌّ كَانَ آدَمُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " نَعَمْ ، جَبَلَ اللهُ تُرْبَتَهُ ، وَخَلَقَهُ بِيَدِهِ ، وَنَفَخَ فِيهِ مِنْ رُوحِهِ ، وَكَلَّمَهُ قُبُلًا ثُمَّ كَثُرَ النَّاسُ حَوْلَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَلَا أُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِأَبْخَلِ النَّاسِ ؟ " قُلْتُ : بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ ذُكِرْتُ عِنْدَهُ فَلَمْ يُصَلِّ عَلَيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ : حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، ثَنَا أَبُو رَافِعٍ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ رُومَانَ ، عَمَّنْ أَخْبَرَهُ ، عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : دَخَلْتُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَإِذَا أَنَا بِرَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَالِسًا وَحْدَهُ فَقُمْتُ أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ وَهُوَ لَا يَرَانِي وَأَقُولُ مَا خَلَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هَكَذَا وَحْدَهُ إِلَّا وَهُوَ عَلَى حَاجَةٍ أَوْ عَلَى وَحْيٍ ، فَجَعَلْتُ أُؤَامِرُ نَفْسِي أَنْ آتِيَهُ ، فَأَبَتْ نَفْسِي إِلَّا أَنْ آتِيَهُ ، فَجِئْتُ فَسَلَّمْتُ ثُمَّ جَلَسْتُ ، فَجَلَسْتُ طَوِيلًا لَا يَلْتَفِتُ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَيَّ وَلَا يُكَلِّمُنِي ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : قَدْ كَرِهَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُجَالَسَتِي ، ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَيَّ فَقَالَ : " يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ " ، فَقُلْتُ : لَبَّيْكَ وَسَعْدَيْكَ . قَالَ : " أَرَكَعْتَ الْيَوْمَ ؟ " قُلْتُ : لَا ، قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " قُمْ فَارْكَعْ " ، فَقُمْتُ فَرَكَعْتُ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ تَعَالَى ، ثُمَّ عُدْتُ فَجَلَسْتُ ، فَمَكَثَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ طَوِيلًا لَا يُكَلِّمُنِي ، فَقُلْتُ : قَدْ كَرِهَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُجَالَسَتِي ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَيَّ فَقَالَ : " يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ " ، قُلْتُ : لَبَّيْكَ وَسَعْدَيْكَ . قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اسْتَعِذْ بِاللهِ مِنْ شَرِّ شَيَاطِينِ الْإِنْسِ وَالْجِنِّ " ، فَقُلْتُ : بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي ، وَلِلْإِنْسِ شَيَاطِينُ ؟
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَلَيْسَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَقُولُ شَيَاطِينَ الإِنْسِ وَالْجِنِّ يُوحِي بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ الْآيَةَ .
ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَيَّ فَقَالَ : يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ ، قُلْتُ : لَبَّيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ كَلِمَةً هِيَ كَنْزٌ مِنْ كُنُوزِ الْجَنَّةِ ؟ " قُلْتُ : بَلَى ، بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : قُلْ : لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ " ثُمَّ أَصَرَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا يَتَكَلَّمُ حَتَّى طَالَ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ ، فَأْتَنَفْتُ الْحَدِيثَ فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، إِنَّكَ أَمَرْتَنِي بِالصَّلَاةِ ، فَمَا الصَّلَاةُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : خَيْرٌ مَوْضُوعٌ ، فَمَنْ شَاءَ اسْتَقَلَّ ، وَمَنْ شَاءَ اسْتَكْثَرَ . قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، فَمَا الصِّيَامُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : فَرْضٌ مُجْزِئٌ . قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، فَمَا الصَّدَقَةُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَضْعَافٌ مُضَاعَفَةٌ ، وَعِنْدَ اللهِ الْمَزِيدُ . قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، أَيُّ الصَّدَقَةِ أَفْضَلُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : جُهْدٌ مِنْ مُقِلٍّ ، وَسِرٌّ إِلَى فَقِيرٍ " قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، فَإِنْ لَمْ أَجِدْ مَا أَتَصَدَّقُ بِهِ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : تُعِينُ ضَعِيفًا ، أَوْ تَصْنَعُ لِأَخْرَقَ . قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، فَإِنْ لَمْ أَسْتَطِعْ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : فَتَكُفُّ هَذَا - وَأَشَارَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى لِسَانِهِ - فَإِنَّهَا صَدَقَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ يَتَصَدَّقُ بِهَا الْمَرْءُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ . قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، أَيُّمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ أَعْظَمُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : آيَةُ الْكُرْسِيِّ ، وَتَدْرِي مَا مَثَلُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ فِي الْكُرْسِيِّ ؟ قُلْتُ : لَا ، إِلَّا أَنْ تُعَلِّمَنِي مِمَّا عَلَّمَكَ اللهُ تَعَالَى ، قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَثَلُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ فِي الْكُرْسِيِّ إِلَّا كَحَلْقَةٍ مُلْقَاةٍ فِي فَلَاةٍ ، وَإِنَّ فَضْلَ الْكُرْسِيِّ عَلَى السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ كَفَضْلِ الْفَلَاةِ عَلَى تِلْكَ الْحَلْقَةِ قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، كَمْ كَانَ الْأَنْبِيَاءُ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " كَانُوا مِائَةَ أَلْفٍ وَأَرْبَعَةً وَعِشْرِينَ أَلْفًا " قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، وَكُلُّهُمْ كَانُوا رُسُلًا ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَا ، كَانَ الرُّسُلُ مِنْهُمْ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ وَثَلَاثَمِائَةِ رَجُلٍ " قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، فَأَيُّهُمْ كَانَ أَوَّلَ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " آدَمُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ " قُلْتُ : وَنَبِيٌّ كَانَ آدَمُ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " نَعَمْ ، جَبَلَ اللهُ تُرْبَتَهُ ، وَخَلَقَهُ بِيَدِهِ ، وَنَفَخَ فِيهِ مِنْ رُوحِهِ ، وَكَلَّمَهُ قُبُلًا ثُمَّ كَثُرَ النَّاسُ حَوْلَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَلَا أُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِأَبْخَلِ النَّاسِ ؟ " قُلْتُ : بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ ذُكِرْتُ عِنْدَهُ فَلَمْ يُصَلِّ عَلَيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I entered the mosque and saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting alone. I stood looking at him (peace and blessings be upon him), while he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not see me, and I said to myself that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sits alone like this only when he (peace and blessings be upon him) has some particular need or revelation is coming down. Then I deliberated with myself again and again about going to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and my heart kept wanting to go to him, so I came, gave the greeting of peace and sat down. I sat for a long while, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) neither turned to me nor spoke to me, and I said (to myself): Perhaps the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dislikes my sitting with him. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to me and said: "O Abu Dharr!" I said: Here I am, at your service. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Have you prayed today?" I said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Get up and pray." So I got up and prayed as much as Allah willed, then came back and sat down. He (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent for a long while and did not speak to me, and I said (to myself again): Perhaps the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not like my sitting with him. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to me and said: "O Abu Dharr!" I said: Here I am, at your service. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Seek refuge with Allah from the evil of the devils among mankind and jinn." I said: May my father and mother be ransomed for you, are there devils among mankind too?
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes. Does Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, not say: "The devils among mankind and jinn, inspiring one another with decorative speech in deception" [Surah al-An'am: 112] (that is, the devils of mankind and jinn who put embellished words into one another's hearts to deceive)?" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to me and said: "O Abu Dharr!" I said: O Messenger of Allah, here I am. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not teach you a phrase which is a treasure from among the treasures of Paradise?" I said: Certainly, may my father and mother be ransomed for you! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (without the help of Allah there is neither strength (to avoid sins) nor resolve (to do good))." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent until a long time had passed, so I began the conversation again and said: O Messenger of Allah, you commanded me to pray; what is the reality of prayer? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is an excellent obligation; so whoever wishes may pray little of it, and whoever wishes may pray much." I said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about fasting? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is an obligation that suffices (in recompense for sins)." I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is charity? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is multiplied many times over, and with Allah there is even more reward." I said: O Messenger of Allah, which deed is the most excellent? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Faith in Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and jihad in the path of Allah Almighty." I said: O Messenger of Allah, which martyr is the most excellent? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one whose blood is shed and whose horse is also wounded and killed." I said: O Messenger of Allah, which slave is the most excellent to free? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who is most expensive in price and most precious to his owners."
I said: O Messenger of Allah, which charity is the most excellent? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Charity given from the hard-earned effort of one who has little, and giving secretly to a poor person." I said: O Messenger of Allah, what if I have nothing to give in charity? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Help someone weak, or do the work of someone unskilled and inexperienced." I said: O Messenger of Allah, what if I cannot do even that? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then hold this back" - and he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to his tongue - "for this too is an excellent charity which a person gives to his own self." I said: O Messenger of Allah, which verse of the Qur'an revealed to you is the greatest? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ayat al-Kursi. And do you know what the likeness of the heavens and the earth is in comparison to the Kursi (Footstool)?" I said: No, unless you teach me from what Allah has taught you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The likeness of the heavens and the earth in comparison to the Kursi is like a ring thrown into a barren desert, and the superiority of the Kursi over the heavens and the earth is like the superiority of that desert over that ring." I said: O Messenger of Allah, what was the total number of the Prophets (peace be upon them)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They were one hundred and twenty-four thousand." I said: O Messenger of Allah, were they all Messengers? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No; rather, the number of Messengers among them was three hundred and fifteen." I said: O Messenger of Allah, who was the first of them? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him)." I said: Was Adam (peace be upon him) a Prophet? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes. Allah prepared his clay, created him with His own Hand, breathed into him of His spirit, and spoke to him directly." Then people crowded around the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you about the most miserly of people?" I said: Certainly, O Messenger of Allah! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one in whose presence I am mentioned and he does not send blessings upon me."
Muhammad bin Abi Umar said: Hisham bin Sulayman narrated the hadith to us, from Abu Rafi', through Yazid bin Ruman, from an unnamed narrator, who narrated this from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him).
