It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked for a servant, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) promised him that if captives came (as a result of battle), he would grant him one.
Then he met Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who told him: O Abu al-Haytham! Captives have come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Go to him (peace and blessings be upon him), for he will certainly fulfil his promise. So Abu al-Haytham and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) went to the noble presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Abu al-Haytham has come to you to have your promise fulfilled? At this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Two black slaves have come to us; choose whichever of them you wish." He submitted: (O Messenger of Allah!) I seek your counsel in this choice. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep this (slave) with you, for he has prayed with us, and never strike him, for we have been forbidden from striking those who pray."
Imam al-Tirmidhi narrated it in abridged form, with this part of the hadith: "The one whose counsel is sought is entrusted."
