It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Indeed, I even command you to do things on which I myself do not act, but I hope that (because of showing you the way of good) I will be granted reward for it from the court of Allah."
Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal narrated it in his book al-Zuhd; the narrator Sharik bin Abdullah al-Qadi in its chain is not free of criticism on account of the weakness of his memory, but this athar from a Companion of the Messenger holds an important place in the chapter of abstinence and piety.
