It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no servant who weeps out of the fear of Allah Almighty such that tears flow from his eyes, and then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, ever enters him into the Fire of Hell (this is impossible), until the drop that has rained from the sky returns (to the clouds)." And it is narrated that when the people returned from the expedition of Mu'tah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took his place on the pulpit with a piece of bread in his blessed hand. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the circumstances of those (Companions), his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed eyes filled with tears, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped his blessed face and said: "Know that I am only a human being. 'A'udhu billahi min al-shaytan al-rajim' (I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed). Indeed, a man feels himself to be very (strong) through his brother (his companionship and support). (Which of you) is owed a promise by me?" At this Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I am. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him that piece. Sayyidah Barakah (Umm Ayman) (may Allah be pleased with her) relates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to his daughter while she was in the throes of death, and she was married to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), his (peace and blessings be upon him) eyes overflowed with tears, upon which Sayyidah Barakah (may Allah be pleased with her) began to weep and (from intense grief) to pull out her hair. He (peace and blessings be upon him) sternly rebuked her for this, and she said: O Messenger of Allah! Are you weeping too, while we are (commanded) to remain silent? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This (weeping) which you have seen from me is mercy (for the girl), and I am only a human being. Indeed, the believer is in a state of good from Allah Almighty in every condition, whether it is a state of hardship or of ease."
The first part of this narration is also found in Sunan al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i, whose chains the imams have graded hasan and sahih, while the remaining part is narrated with other historical and hadith witnesses in the books of Sirah and Sunan.
