قَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ ، ثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ ، ثَنَا عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ قَالَ : زَعَمَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ حَنْظَلَةَ : أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ سَلَامٍ ، مَرَّ فِي السُّوقِ عَلَيْهِ حُزْمَةٌ مِنْ حَطَبٍ ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ : أَلَيْسَ قَدْ أَغْنَاكَ اللهُ تَعَالَى عَنْ هَذَا ؟ قَالَ : بَلَى ، وَلَكِنْ أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَقْمَعَ الْكِبْرَ ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ مَنْ كَانَ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ حَبَّةِ خَرْدَلٍ مِنْ كِبْرٍ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hanzalah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) passed through the market carrying a bundle of firewood. It was said to him: "Has Allah Almighty not made you rich and free of need of this (toil and labour)?" He replied: "Of course (it is Allah's grace), but my intention is to crush arrogance (in my own self) by it, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'The one in whose heart there is arrogance even the weight of a mustard seed will not be able to enter Paradise.'"
Imam Abu Ya'la narrated it; its chain contains Isma'il bin Sinan, who is da'if (weak), though the last part of the hadith (the prohibition of arrogance) is established by other authentic and reliable hadith.
