It is narrated from Jabalah al-Yahsubi that we were with one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and among the hadith he narrated to us was this: a Muslim said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the path of salvation tomorrow, on the Day of Resurrection? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not try to deceive Allah Almighty." The man said: How can Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, be deceived? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By your doing what Allah has commanded you, while your aim in it is someone other than the pleasure of Allah. So beware of showing off (riya'), for it is shirk with Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. Indeed, on the Day of Resurrection the show-off will be called before all of creation by four names: O wicked one! O disbeliever! O loser! O deceiver! Your deeds have gone to waste and your reward is lost; today you have no share with Allah Almighty. O cheat! Now go and seek your reward from the one for whose display you used to act." Jabalah says: I asked that Companion: Do you swear by Allah, besides whom there is no god worthy of worship, that you yourself heard this saying from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He replied: By Allah, besides whom there is no god! I heard this directly from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), unless something (in the telling) has slipped in that I did not intend. Yazid says: I think he recited these verses of the Noble Qur'an: 'So whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him do righteous deeds and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord' [Surah al-Kahf: 110] and 'Indeed, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but He is deceiving them' [Surah al-Nisa': 142].
Imam Ahmad bin Mani' recorded this hadith in his Musnad; its chain contains al-Faraj bin Fadalah, a da'if (weak) narrator, though there are other authentic hadith on the prohibition of showing off and its being minor shirk.
