حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ ، ثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ ، مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ ، عَنْ صَدَقَةَ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ غَزِيَّةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ ، أُرَاهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ - شَكَّ الرَّاوِي - قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْأَعْوَادِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ : " مَا قَلَّ وَكَفَى خَيْرٌ مِمَّا كَثُرَ وَأَلْهَى " .
Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Sa'id (narrating from his father, Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him); the narrator is in doubt) relates:
I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying on the pulpit (the wooden structure, al-a'wad); he (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "What is little and suffices (for need) is far better than what is plentiful and distracts (from the remembrance of Allah)."
