It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A woman and a dog (by passing in front of the one praying) interrupt the prayer." (The narrator says:) I asked: Then what will protect me (from the effect of their passing), that is, serve as a barrier (sutrah)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "An arrow, a camel saddle, and a stone (may be used as a sutrah)."
In the chain of this narration, Dawud bin al-Muhabbar and Abu Harun al-Abdi are both weak narrators, so this narration is weak in its chain; however, the importance of the sutrah and the various things that may serve as one are mentioned in other sahih hadith.
