It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked (about the meanings of the letters of the abjad), and he mentioned a marfu' hadith in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for 'Abu Jad': the 'B' stands for the grandeur and splendour (baha) of Allah Almighty, the 'J' stands for the beauty (jamal) of Allah Almighty, and the 'D' stands for the beloved religion (din) of Allah Almighty which He has chosen for Himself, His angels, His prophets, His messengers and the righteous among His creation. As for 'Hawwaz': the 'H' stands for the humiliation and disgrace of the people of the Fire, and the 'Z' stands for the raging and roaring (zafir) of Hell against the enemies of Allah and the disobedient.
As for 'Hutti': it means that the sins of the sinners were shed (that is, wiped away) through seeking forgiveness. As for 'Kalamun': the 'K' stands for the perfection (kamal) of the people of Paradise (in blessings), at which they said: 'Praise be to Allah, who has fulfilled His promise to us' [Surah al-Zumar: 74], and the 'N' stands for the fish (nun) from whose liver the people of Paradise will eat (as a feast of welcome) before entering Paradise. As for 'Sa'fas': it means a measure for a measure and a recompense for a recompense, that is, as you do, so shall you be repaid. As for 'Qarashat': it means that all people were presented for the reckoning (before Allah)."
