It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not acquire knowledge with the intention of boasting before the scholars and vaunting your superiority over them, nor learn it in order to argue and dispute with the foolish and ignorant, nor in order to dazzle people's eyes to draw their attention to yourselves (that is, seeking fame and acclaim); whoever does this will be in the Fire (of Hell)."
Ishaq bin Rahwayh recorded this hadith in his Musnad; and although its chain has been criticized, supporting reports with the same meaning exist in Sunan al-Tirmidhi (2654) and Sunan Ibn Majah (254), which support its meaning.
