It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The likeness of knowledge that is not spoken of (and is not conveyed to others) is like a treasure from which nothing is spent in the path of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic."
Ahmad recorded this hadith in his Musnad (9109) and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat (686); its chain contains the narrator Ibrahim bin Muslim al-Hajari, who is weak in memory; however, the encouragement to spread knowledge and not to conceal it is established by other authentic texts.
