Abu Burdah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I wrote a book (of hadith) from what I heard from my father, and my father (on seeing it) said: "Were it not that it contains a verse of the Book of Allah Almighty, I would certainly have burned it." Then he called for a basin or tub of water (to wash the writing away), then said: "Memorize from me orally, memorize from me orally! (Commit to mind) what you have heard from me, for I myself did not write down and preserve any book (of hadith) from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then (out of fear of Allah) he said: "You had almost brought your father to ruin."
