It is narrated from Sayyiduna Khalid bin Urfutah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was sitting in the gathering of Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him) when a man from the tribe of Abd al-Qays, who lived in a region called al-Sus, was brought. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: "Are you so-and-so, son of so-and-so, al-Abdi?" He said: Yes. So he (may Allah be pleased with him) struck him with a stick that he had with him. The man said: O Commander of the Believers, what is my fault? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Sit down." When he sat, he (may Allah be pleased with him) recited these verses before him: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the clear Book. Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an so that you may understand. We relate to you the best of stories" [Surah Yusuf: 1-3]. He (may Allah be pleased with him) recited these verses three times and struck him three times. The man again asked: O Commander of the Believers, what is my crime? He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Are you the one who made a copy of the book of Daniyal (peace be upon him)?" He said: Whatever you command me, I will obey. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Go and erase it with hot water and a piece of white wool, then neither read it yourself nor teach it to any Muslim; if it reaches me that you have read it or taught it to any Muslim, I will punish you severely as an example." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) seated him in front of himself and (relating his own incident) said: I myself copied a book from the People of the Book and brought it written on a piece of leather, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: "O Umar, what is this in your hand?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, it is a book that I copied in order to increase my knowledge. Hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became extremely angry, until his blessed eyes turned red. Then the call to the (congregational) prayer was made, and the Ansar said: Your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has been angered! Take up your weapons, take up your weapons! until they came and gathered around the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have brought you a religion that is perfectly clear, bright and pure; so do not fall into confusion and bewilderment, and do not let those who have themselves strayed from the truth deceive you." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I stood up and said: 'Raditu billahi Rabban, wa bil-Islami dinan, wa bika rasulan' (I am wholeheartedly pleased with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, and with you as Messenger). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came down from the pulpit.
Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili recorded this hadith in his Musnad; its chain contains a narrator named Abd al-Rahman bin Ishaq, who is da'if (weak); however, there are other supporting reports of this incident of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated through various chains in Musnad Ahmad and other books of hadith.
