قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَطَاءُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ الْحَلَبِيُّ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لِعَمْرِو بْنِ قَيْسٍ الْمُلَائِيِّ : اكْتُبْ لِي هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ ، فَقَالَ : لَا ، إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ النَّخَعِيَّ قَالَ : لَا تَكْتُبُوا فَتَتَّكِلُوا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ : قَالَ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنَحْنُ نَكْتُبُ شَيْئًا مِنَ الْحَدِيثِ ، فَقَالَ : مَا هَذَا يَا مُعَاذُ ؟ قُلْنَا : سَمِعْنَاهُ مِنْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : يَكْفِيكُمْ هَذَا الْقُرْآنُ مِمَّا سِوَاهُ فَمَا كَتَبْنَا شَيْئًا بَعْدُ .

Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ata bin Muslim al-Halabi informed us; he said: I said to Amr bin Qays al-Mula'i: Write this hadith down for me. He refused and said that Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Do not write, or else you will come to rely (solely on writing)." Then Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that it is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us while we were writing down some hadith, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Mu'adh, what is this?" We said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), these are sayings we heard from you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This Qur'an suffices you compared to everything else." So after that we did not write anything again.
