It is narrated from Thumamah bin Hazn that he said: I was with Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) when a man came and said: "I did not see Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) yesterday, and I fear that he may slip away from me, so I would like you to ask him about an issue on my behalf." He said: "Go yourself and ask him for a verdict." The narrator said: Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was standing in front of his tent when a man came to the open ground, went to him and then came back. Thumamah said: When he came, he told us; he said: I went and said: "O Abdullah bin Amr, give me a verdict! O Abdullah bin Amr, give me a verdict! O Abdullah bin Amr, give me a verdict!" He pointed to his tongue and said: "Do not say anything with this except the truth," and pointing to his hand he said: "Do nothing with this except righteous deeds; you will enter Paradise without any reckoning or punishment." I said: "You have been very lenient and brief in your verdict!" He said: "You came at a time when I had already intended to set out for the Ka'bah and my cloak or my garment had already been spread out for the journey; and if I said this, it is because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was granted moderation and comprehensiveness in all his affairs. So it was said to him: 'Rise and be brief and easy in speech and rulings.' So he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and spoke in the most comprehensive and concise manner, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was more concise and comprehensive in speech than all who came before him and after him." I asked: "O Abdullah bin Amr, does Allah Almighty accept repentance from every sin?" He replied: "Yes."
Sahih mawquf (authentic, the saying of a Companion).
