It is narrated from Wabarah (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him), saw Sayyiduna Tamim al-Dari (may Allah be pleased with him) performing (a voluntary) prayer after the Asr prayer, so he struck him with his whip. At this, Sayyiduna Tamim al-Dari (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "O Umar! Why are you striking me for performing a prayer that I myself performed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "O Tamim! (I am aware of the reality of your practice, but) not all people possess the insight of knowledge that you have (and I fear that, following you, people will make prayer at this time a habit)."
This report is from the Musnad of al-Harith, and the narrators in its chain have been declared trustworthy. This incident also indicates the prohibition of voluntary prayer after Asr and the ruler's warning to keep the general public away from the disliked times.
