Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 2889 — The traits that admit one to Paradise

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to me): "Go out and announce among the people that whoever bears witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, Paradise has become due for him." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then I went out (with this command), and I met Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He asked: O Abu Bakr! What is the matter with you (where are you going)? I replied that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said this to me, and then I told him the whole matter. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said (on hearing this): "Go back, for I fear that people will rely solely on this (glad tidings) (and become lax in righteous deeds)." So I returned to the noble presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What made you come back?" I informed him (peace and blessings be upon him) of what Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had said, upon which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Umar has spoken the truth."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this hadith in his Musnad (2889); its narrator Suwayd bin Sa'id is saduq (truthful), but Suwayd bin Abd al-Aziz is da'if (weak); however, the origin of this incident is found in Sahih Muslim (hadith: 31) in the narration of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), which mentions this same prudent advice of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and its endorsement by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
