قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَاصِمٍ الثَّقَفِيِّ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ قَالَ : إِنَّ جَرِيرَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَرِيرٍ أَتَاهُ ، فَأَلْقَى لَهُ وِسَادَةً ، وَعِنْدَهُ مَشْيَخَةٌ ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ فِي ذَلِكَ ، فَقَالَ : بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ :إِذَا أَتَاكُمْ كَرِيمُ قَوْمٍ فَأَكْرِمُوهُ .
It is narrated from Imam al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) that Jarir bin Yazid bin Jarir came to him, and he spread out a cushion for him (to sit on) in his honour, although some honoured elders and shaykhs were also sitting with him. When he was asked about this conduct, he said: "This hadith has reached me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'When the honoured and dignified person of a people comes to you, then honour and respect him.'"
