It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him) had a slave-girl whose name was like the names of the Ajam (non-Arabs). So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) changed her name to "Jamilah". Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), (seeing the slave-girl's hesitation over the change of name,) said to her: "Between me and you is the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (to decide this matter)." So we came into the blessed presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him), addressing that slave-girl, said: "You are Jamilah." (After the confirmation from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him),) Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to her: "Now accept this name despite your dislike."
Imam Ibn Abi Umar al-Adani narrated this hadith, and all of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
