قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ الطَّائِفِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، عَنْ نُجَيْدِ بْنِ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ : إِنَّهُ أَعْطَى شَاعِرًا ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ : يَا أَبَا نُجَيْدٍ ، أَتُعْطِي شَاعِرًا ؟ قَالَ : " إِنِّي أَفْتَدِي عِرْضِي مِنْهُ " .
Nujayd bin Imran (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), that he gave a poet a monetary gift. It was said to him: O Abu Nujayd, are you giving money to a poet? He said: "Indeed, I am thereby protecting my honour and dignity by ransoming it from him (from his satire and slander)."
Imam Abu Dawud narrated this hadith, and its chain is hasan (good).
