Abdullah bin Iyas bin Abi Fatimah narrates from his father, who narrates from his grandfather, that once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated when he suddenly asked (peace and blessings be upon him): "Which of you would like never to be afflicted by any illness?" We all hastened to say: O Messenger of Allah, we (would like that). So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Would you like to be like stubborn, roaming donkeys?" As he said this, the expression on the blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) changed, until we saw signs of displeasure on his (peace and blessings be upon him) face. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Would you not like to be people of trials and of expiations (for sins)?" The Companions said: Of course, O Messenger of Allah! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul! The believer is indeed tested with trials, and that is because of his honour and esteem with Allah Almighty; and he is kept in affliction until he attains with Allah Almighty that lofty rank and station which he could not have attained without trial. So Allah Almighty brings him (through the trial) to that very rank."
Muhammad bin Abi Humayd is a da'if (weak) narrator.
Imam Abu Bakr also narrated something similar from Mus'ab bin al-Miqdam, from Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Abi Humayd.
