It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: In one of the years of the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), locusts became scarce. He asked about them but could not get any news, which grieved him greatly. So he sent one rider towards Yemen, one towards Syria, and one rider towards Iraq, having them ask: "Has anything of the locusts been seen or not?" The rider who came from the direction of Yemen brought a handful of locusts with him and threw them down before him. When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw them, he said the takbir "Allahu akbar" three times, then said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created a thousand kinds of creatures (or species), six hundred of them in the sea and four hundred on land. The first of these creatures to perish will be the locust, and when it perishes, the other creatures will perish one after another, just as when the thread of a string of beads (or a strand) breaks, its beads keep falling in succession."
