قَالَ الْحَارِثُ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ أَبَانَ ، ثَنَا هِشَامٌ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ قَالَ : أَتَى رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْعَجَمِ الْمَسْجِدَ ، وَقَدْ وَفَّرَ شَارِبَهُ ، وَجَزَّ لِحْيَتَهُ ، فَقَالَ [لَهُ] رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى هَذَا ؟ قَالَ : إِنَّ رَبِّي أَمَرَنِي بِهَذَا ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أُوَفِّرَ لِحْيَتِي ، وَأُحْفِيَ شَارِبِي .
It is narrated from Yahya bin Abi Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) that a non-Arab man came to the mosque; he had let his moustache grow long and had cut his beard short. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "What prompted you to do this?" He said: "My Lord commanded me to do this." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has commanded me to let my beard grow and to trim my moustache short."
