It is narrated from Sayyiduna Gharafah bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him), who had the honour of the companionship of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he passed by a man who wore a new garment or robe (hullah) every day that did not resemble the previous day's garment, meaning he changed into three hundred and sixty garments a year, and he was a dhimmi (one living under a covenant). Sayyiduna Gharafah (may Allah be pleased with him) invited him to Islam, and the man became enraged and spoke offensive words about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (that is, he insulted him), whereupon Sayyiduna Gharafah (may Allah be pleased with him) killed him. Then Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "These people feel secure with us only because of our covenant (and we have granted them safe conduct)." Sayyiduna Gharafah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "We certainly did not make this covenant with them on the basis that they could hurt us by insulting Allah Almighty and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)."
