It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to her): "Hand me the khumrah (a small mat for prostration made of palm leaves)." (The narrator said:) It was asked: Who was the one who said this? She said that it was the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) said (because she was menstruating): I am menstruating. At this he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, your menstruation is not in your hand."
The chain of this hadith is hasan (good), and it has supporting reports in Sahih Muslim. This makes clear the scholarly point that the body of a menstruating woman, and the things she touches, are not impure, and that the impurity of menstruation is a legal (hukmi) impurity which does not make the human body or hand impure.
