It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said to Hanan bin Kharijah: "O Hanan, begin with your own self and wage jihad against it. O servant of Allah, begin with your own self and fight against it; for the reality is that if you are killed while fleeing (from the battlefield), Allah Almighty will raise you in the state of one who fled; if you gave your life merely for fame and show, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will raise you as a show-off; but if you gave your life showing steadfastness and purely seeking Allah's pleasure and reward, Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, will raise you on the Day of Resurrection as one who was patient and sought reward."
