Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1927 — The prohibition of calling someone

It is narrated from Abu al-Bakhtari al-Ta'i that some people in Kufah were with Ibn al-Mukhtar (the father of al-Mukhtar bin Abi Ubayd) when he was martyred at the place called "Jisr Abi Ubayd" (the Bridge of Abu Ubayd). The narrator says: All the people who were there were killed except two or three men, who drew their swords and launched a fierce attack on the enemy, so the enemy cleared a way for them and they escaped. Then they came to Madinah. Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came out while they were sitting and talking about the slain. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What did you say about them?" They said: "We sought forgiveness for them and prayed for them." He (may Allah be pleased with him) said sternly: "Tell me plainly what words you said about them, or you will find me harsh." They said: "We declared them 'martyrs'." On hearing this he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By the One besides whom there is no god worthy of worship, by the One who sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth, and by the One without whose command the Hour will not be established, no living soul knows what reward and station a dead soul has with Allah, except the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), for Allah, Glorified and Exalted, has said about him (peace and blessings be upon him): 'That Allah may forgive you what preceded of your sins and what came after' [Surah al-Fath: 2]." Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) swore again and said: "By the One besides whom there is no god, by the One who sent Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth, and by the One without whose permission the Hour will not come, the reality is that one man fights merely to show off, another fights out of tribal zeal and partisanship, another fights out of greed for the world, and another wages war to acquire wealth and riches; and with Allah, those who fight have only the reward that was in their intentions."
All the narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy), but this report is munqati' (broken) in its chain.
