It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man wounded another in the knee with a horn. The injured man came into the blessed presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) demanding retaliation. He was advised: "Wait for now until your wound heals (so that the extent of the damage can be properly assessed)." But he refused, and in haste he took retaliation. The narrator says: (Afterwards) his own leg became permanently defective, while the leg of the one from whom retaliation had been taken healed. The man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again, and he was told: "Now you have no right left, because you refused (to accept the advice to be patient)."
In the chain of this report, Uthman bin Abi Shaybah corroborated Abu Bakr in narrating it from Isma'il. Imam al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him) said that both sons of Abu Shaybah (Abu Bakr and Uthman) erred in it, because Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded it from Ibn Ulayyah as a mursal report of Amr bin Dinar, and among the reports from Amr bin Dinar this (its being mursal) is the preserved and correct position.
