It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called one of his maidservants, but she was slow in coming. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not for the fear of retaliation on the Day of Resurrection, I would have punished you with this tooth-stick (miswak)."
In the narration of Abu Ya'la, Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) gave further detail: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in my house, and in his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed hand was a miswak. He (peace and blessings be upon him) called one of his maidservants, until signs of displeasure became evident on his (peace and blessings be upon him) radiant face. Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) went out towards the courtyard and saw that the maidservant was playing with a young lamb. She rebuked her: "Do I see you playing with this lamb while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is calling you?" She said: "No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I did not hear your (peace and blessings be upon him) call." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not for the fear of retaliation, I would certainly have hurt you with this miswak."
Abu Ya'la also narrated this hadith through the chains of al-Hasan bin Hammad and Sufyan bin Waki', which support the same meaning.
