It is narrated from Sa'd bin Mas'ud al-Kindi that Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) came into the blessed presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I dislike looking at the private parts of my wife, nor do I want her to see mine. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why do you say that? Allah Almighty has made you a garment for her, and I see the private parts of my wives and they see mine." He said: O Messenger of Allah! Who can compare with you? Then, when he turned his back and left, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said in his praise: "Indeed, Ibn Maz'un is an exceedingly modest person who keeps himself covered."
The imams and commentators explain at this point that in the Shari'ah there is no restriction of covering the private parts between spouses; however, this feeling of Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) was a manifestation of his extraordinary natural modesty, asceticism and piety, which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praised as an individual virtue.
