Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1621 — The scarcity of righteous women

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to her house together with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Aishah! Give us food." She said: By Allah! We have no food. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said again: "Give us food." She said again: By Allah! There is no food available with us. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said a third time: "Give us food." She again gave the same reply: By Allah! We have nothing. At this Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! A believing woman never swears that something is not with her while it is there. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How do you know whether she is a perfect believer or not? Indeed, the example of a true believing woman among all women is like that of the white-footed crow in a flock of crows, which is very rare; and indeed the Fire was created for the foolish, and women too are among the foolish, except the one with the comb and the lamp."
According to the commentators of hadith, 'ghurab a'sam' is the rare crow whose feet or wings are white; this is a metaphor for the fact that women of perfect faith and lofty qualities are very few, while 'the one with the comb and the lamp' means the righteous woman who adorns herself for her husband and diligently fulfils the responsibilities of the home.
