It is narrated from al-Hakam bin Utaybah that Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) brought a dispute before Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the right of wala' (clientage) over the freed slaves of Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her). Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "She is my paternal aunt; I am the one responsible for paying blood money on her behalf, and I am her heir." Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "She is my mother, and I am her heir." At this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made wala' follow inheritance?" So he gave judgement in favour of Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him).
