It is narrated from Imam al-Zuhri, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The protected boundary (harim) of an ancient well from the pre-Islamic era is fifty cubits, and the protected boundary of a newly dug well is twenty-five cubits." Sa'id bin al-Musayyib said this on his own account and did not attribute it (marfu') to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "And the protected boundary of a well dedicated to farming is three hundred cubits." Imam Abu Dawud recorded this narration in his work al-Marasil through the route of Imam al-Thawri, via Isma'il bin Umayyah alone.
