It is narrated from Ibn Abi Mulaykah (may Allah have mercy on him) that Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): "Woe to you! Have you gone astray? You order Umrah in these ten days (of Dhu al-Hijjah) although there is no Umrah (prescribed) in them!" Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied: "O Urayy (an affectionate form of Urwah)! Go and ask your mother (Sayyidah Asma' bint Abi Bakr, may Allah be pleased with her)!" Urwah said: "Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) did not say that, and they knew the ways of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) better than you and followed in his footsteps more closely." At this Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "This is where you are being struck (i.e. your argument is weak): we bring you the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and in reply you bring the sayings of Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both)!"
The chain of this report is sahih (authentic). Part of it, concerning Umrah in the days of Hajj, is also in Sahih Muslim, and it is alluded to in the statement of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) in the two Sahihs, "It is the Sunnah of Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him)," when Abu Jamrah told him that he had heard someone say to him in a dream: "Your Umrah, or your Hajj Tamattu', is accepted in the court of Allah."
