It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him), issued this ruling [concerning the expiation for hunting in the state of ihram]: "For a jerboa (a squirrel-like rodent), a jafrah (a four-month-old female kid); for hunting a hyena, a ram; for a deer, a goat; and for a rabbit, an 'anaq (a young female goat), is due as recompense."
Yazid bin Zuray' has also reported this narration through Abu al-Zubayr, while in the narration of Ahmad bin Mani' only the jerboa is mentioned. In addition, in the chain of Imam Abu Ya'la there is this scholarly addition, that the narrator says: "My strong opinion is that Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him) reported this ruling from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as marfu' (that is, as being his (peace and blessings be upon him) own statement)."
