Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1278 — The compensation for game

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the place "Sifah al-Rawha'" when we came upon a wounded wild donkey. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Surely the owner of this wild donkey is about to come." So hardly any time had passed before its owner arrived and said: "Accept it (as a gift)." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to distribute it among all the travelling companions. Then we went on from there until, when we reached "al-Uthayah" at "al-Arj", there was a deer lying curled up with an arrow lodged deep in its body. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to stand by it so as to protect it from the people (interfering with it). And the owner of that wild donkey was a man from the tribe of Banu Bahz.
I (Ibn Hajar) say: Outwardly the chain of this narration appears sahih (authentic), but it is ma'lul (has a hidden defect), as Ali bin al-Madini explained in "Kitab al-'Ilal": he said to Ibn Uyaynah: "The other scholars of hadith differ from you; they do not narrate it with the chain 'Isa bin Talhah from his father'!" Ibn Uyaynah said: "I have narrated the hadith to you; my assumption was that it is from his father." According to Ali bin al-Madini, the correct version is that it is narrated as "Isa bin Talhah from al-Bahzi."
