Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) states that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say to Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Ka'b bin Ujrah! Prayer is a means of attaining nearness, fasting is a shield, and charity extinguishes sin just as water extinguishes fire. O Ka'b bin Ujrah! People begin their morning in two states, people begin their morning in two states: one man sells himself and makes himself a slave, and another buys himself and sets himself free."
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Ishaq bin Abi Isra'il, who is thiqah (trustworthy) and ma'mun (reliable).

Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ka'b bin Ujrah! When rulers come over you such that whoever goes to them affirms them in their lies and helps them in their oppression, that person has nothing to do with me and I have nothing to do with him, and he will not be able to come to me at the Pond; and whoever goes to them but does not affirm them in their lies and does not help them in their oppression, that person is connected with me and I am connected with him. O Ka'b bin Ujrah! No flesh or blood that has grown from what is unlawful will enter Paradise; Hell is more deserving of it. O Ka'b bin Ujrah! People begin their morning in two states: one man frees his neck and sets it free, and another enslaves it. O Ka'b! Prayer is a proof, and charity removes sin just as a frozen drop slips off a smooth surface." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
Al-Tirmidhi recorded it in abridged form.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
