Hamrah bin Abd Kulal states: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) set out to travel to Sham after his first journey to Sham. When he drew near to Sham, he and his companions received news that the plague had spread in Sham. His companions said to him: "Go back and do not enter Sham; if you go to Sham while the plague is there, then we do not think you will be able to come back from there." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) turned back towards Madinah. That night he halted in the last part of the night, and I was the closest of the people to him at that time. When he rose, I also rose behind him, and I heard him saying: "When I had come near to Sham, these people made me turn back from there because the plague is there. Behold! My turning back from there will not delay the time of my death, nor would my going there have hastened the appointed time of death. Behold! After returning to Madinah and finishing the necessary tasks, I will travel again, go and stay in Sham, and then I will enter Hims, because I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Allah Almighty will raise from there (on the Day of Resurrection) seventy thousand people who will not be taken to account and will not be punished; they will be raised from between the olive trees (in) its soft soil and its walls.'"
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abu Bakr bin Abi Maryam, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Asqalan is one of the two brides. From there, on the Day of Resurrection, seventy thousand people will be raised who will not be taken to account, and from there 50 thousand martyrs will be raised who will go as a delegation to the presence of Allah Almighty. And there will be rows of those martyrs whose heads will be cut off and held in their hands, blood gushing from their veins, and they will say: 'Our Lord! Grant us what You promised us through Your Messengers; indeed You do not break the promise.' The Lord will say: 'My servants have spoken the truth; wash them in the River of al-Baydah.' When they come out of it they will be clean and shining white, and then they will stay wherever they wish in Paradise."
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abu Iqal Hilal bin Zayd bin Yasar, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy) and the majority declared da'if (weak); the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). There is a difference of opinion about the narrator Isma'il bin Ayyash.

Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) states: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); one day he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned "the people of a graveyard." The narrator states: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for mercy for them, and prayed for mercy for them abundantly. The narrator states: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about them, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people of the graveyard are the martyrs of Asqalan; they will be escorted in procession to Paradise just as a bride is escorted to her husband."
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Bashir bin Maymun, and he is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Malik bin Buhaynah (may Allah be pleased with him) states: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting among his Companions, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah Almighty send down mercy upon the people of that graveyard." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said these words three times. The narrator says: We could not tell which graveyard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had not mentioned any name concerning them. The narrator states: Then one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to one of the honoured wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator Attaf says: I was told that this honoured wife was Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her). That Companion said to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): "the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the people of a certain graveyard and prayed for mercy for them, but he did not tell us which graveyard it is." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about that graveyard. the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people of the graveyard of Asqalan (that is, it was for them that I made that supplication)."
Abu Ya'la and al-Bazzar recorded it, and his wording is: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for forgiveness for the people of the graveyard of Asqalan and prayed for mercy for them. In Abu Ya'la's chain there is a narrator, Ali bin Abdullah bin Malik bin Buhaynah, and in al-Bazzar's chain the narrator's name is Malik bin Abdullah bin Buhaynah, and I do not know either of them; the rest of the narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). There is a slight difference of opinion about some of its narrators.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) states: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I wish to take part in fighting in the path of Allah." the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You must go to Sham, for Allah Almighty has given me a guarantee concerning Sham and its people. And within Sham, stay in Asqalan, for when the millstone (of trials) turns in my Ummah, its inhabitants will be in goodness and well-being."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat with similar wording, but there he has these words: "When the millstone of my Ummah turns, its inhabitants will be in ease and well-being." Its chain contains a narrator, Yahya bin Sulayman al-Madani, and he is da'if (weak).
