Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Banu Ubayd! Who is your chief?" They said: "It is Jadd bin Qays, although there is miserliness in him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What illness is worse than miserliness? Rather, your chief is Bishr bin al-Bara' bin Ma'rur."
Al-Tabarani and al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Sa'd bin Muhammad al-Warraq, who is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Banu Salimah! Who is your chief?" They submitted: "It is Jadd bin Qays, though we accuse him of miserliness." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What illness is worse than miserliness?" They submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! Then who will be our chief?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bishr bin al-Bara' bin Ma'rur."
Al-Tabarani recorded it with two chains, and the narrators of one of them are the narrators of the Sahih, except for al-Tabarani's two teachers; however, I have not seen anyone declare those two weak.

Ibn Shihab, among those from the Ansar who took part in the Pledge of al-Aqabah, mentioned Sayyiduna Bishr bin al-Bara' bin Ma'rur (may Allah be pleased with him) from Banu Salimah, a branch of the Ansar. He is the one who, at Khaybar, ate with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from the meat of the goat in which poison had been mixed.
Al-Tabarani recorded it as mursal (with a missing Companion link), and its chain is hasan (good). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: This report has various routes, which I have mentioned in their relevant places.
