Humayd bin Mahabb al-Ta'i narrates: Sayyidah Hind bint Utbah (may Allah be pleased with her) was the wife of al-Fakih bin al-Mughirah al-Makhzumi. Al-Fakih was one of the young men of Quraysh. He had a room set aside for guests, which people would enter without asking permission. One day there was no one else in the house; only al-Fakih and Hind were lying down to rest at midday. Then al-Fakih went out for some errand of his. Meanwhile one of his visitors came and entered the house. When he saw that a woman was inside, he hurried back out at once. Al-Fakih saw the man as he was leaving the house. He came to Hind, kicked her with his foot and asked: Who was that man who was just with you? Sayyidah Hind (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: There was no one with me at all, and I only woke up when you shook me. Al-Fakih said: Go back to your father. People began to talk about it. Sayyidah Hind's (may Allah be pleased with her) father said to her: O my daughter, people are talking a great deal about you, so tell me the real situation. If that man is telling the truth about you, I will arrange for someone to kill him; and if he is lying, I will take your case before one of the soothsayers of Yemen. So she swore to him, by what they used to swear by, that he was lying about her. Then Utbah said to al-Fakih: O man, you have accused my daughter of a grave matter, so now bring the case with me before one of the soothsayers of Yemen. Utbah set out with a group of the people of Banu Abd Manaf, al-Fakih set out with a group of the people of Banu Makhzum, and Sayyidah Hind (may Allah be pleased with her) set out with them along with some women. They kept passing through various regions. The people said: We are about to go to the soothsayer. Hind's condition was changing and her face was altering. Sayyidah Hind's (may Allah be pleased with her) father said to her: I see that your condition is changing, and the only reason for this can be that this matter is something you dread. Why did this not happen before people joined us on our journey? Sayyidah Hind (may Allah be pleased with her) said: No, by Allah, O father, I did not do that wrong. Rather, the thought came to me that you are going to a human being who can be wrong and can also be right, and there is the fear that he may cast some accusation upon me, which would then remain an accusation against me forever. Utbah said: I will test him before he examines your matter. Utbah whistled in his horse's ear until its private part hung down. Then Utbah took a grain of wheat, inserted it into the opening of its private part and tied a piece of cloth over it. The next morning, when they reached the soothsayer, he showed them hospitality and slaughtered an animal for them. Then Utbah said to him: We have come to you about a matter, but before that I have hidden something for you; tell me about it and examine what it is. He said: A grain in a male's private part. Utbah said: I want something clearer than that. He said: A grain of wheat inside the private part of a colt. Utbah said: You have spoken correctly; now examine the matter of these women. So he went up to one of them, struck her on the shoulder and said: Stand up, neither feeling fear nor being an adulteress, and you will give birth to a boy whose name will be Mu'awiyah. Al-Fakih then got up and came to that woman. He took Sayyidah Hind (may Allah be pleased with her) by the hand, but Sayyidah Hind (may Allah be pleased with her) pulled her hand free from his and said: Get away! By Allah, it is my wish that this child be from someone other than you. Later, Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) married this woman, and Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) was born.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Zahr bin Hisn, who is majhul (unknown).
