Sayyiduna Qudamah bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came up to Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him); he was riding his mount and Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) was riding his. This was at the mountain pass called "Uthayah" at al-Arj. Sayyiduna Umar's (may Allah be pleased with him) mount cut across Sayyiduna Uthman's (may Allah be pleased with him) mount (and he received a jolt), while the mount of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had already gone ahead. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O you who shut the door of tribulation, you have hurt me. When the mounts reached level ground, Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came up to Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) again and said: Abu al-Sa'ib, may Allah Almighty forgive you; what is the reason for the name by which you called me? Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No, by Allah! I did not give you this name; rather, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) is ahead of the others among those in front. One day you passed by while we were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is a lock against tribulations. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this pointing with his blessed hand, (and then he further said:) Between you and tribulation there will be a firmly locked door as long as this man remains alive among you.
Imam al-Tabarani and Imam al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains a group of narrators whom I do not know, and a narrator, Yahya bin al-Mutawakkil, who is da'if (weak).

It is reported about Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he met Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took his hand and squeezed it; Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was a man of strong build. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Let go of my hand, O you who are a lock against tribulation. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What is meant by being a lock against tribulation? Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) explained: One day you were coming to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated, and people were gathered around him (peace and blessings be upon him), and you sat down at the back. At that time the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: As long as this man remains among you, tribulation will not reach you.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except al-Sari bin Yahya, who is thiqah and thabt (trustworthy and firm); however, there is also the point that, in my view, al-Hasan al-Basri did not hear from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him).
