عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ - يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ - أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ ، إِنِّي رَأَيْتُنِي الْبَارِحَةَ عَلَى قَلِيبٍ أَنْزِعُ ، فَجِئْتَ أَنْتَ فَنَزَعْتَ وَأَنْتَ ضَعِيفٌ وَاللَّهُ يَغْفِرُ لَكَ ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ عُمَرُ فَاسْتَحَالَتْ غَرْبًا ، وَضَرَبَ النَّاسُ بِعَطَنٍ " .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ أَيُّوبُ بْنُ جَابِرٍ ، وَقَدْ وُثِّقَ ، وَضَعَّفَهُ غَيْرُ وَاحِدٍ ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ وُثِّقُوا .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ أَيُّوبُ بْنُ جَابِرٍ ، وَقَدْ وُثِّقَ ، وَضَعَّفَهُ غَيْرُ وَاحِدٍ ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ وُثِّقُوا .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Bakr! Last night I saw myself (in a dream) at a well, drawing water. Then you came and began drawing water, and there was weakness in you; may Allah Almighty forgive you. Then Umar came, and it (the bucket) became a huge bucket, and he gave the people ample water."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ayyub bin Jabir, who has been declared thiqah (trustworthy), but more than one have declared him da'if (weak). The remaining narrators of this report have been declared trustworthy.

وَعَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ : أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " بَيْنَا أَنَا أَنْزِعُ اللَّيْلَةَ إِذْ وَرَدَتْ عَلَيَّ غَنَمٌ سُودٌ وَعُفْرٌ ، فَجَاءَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَنَزَعَ ذَنُوبًا أَوْ ذَنُوبِينَ وَفِي نَزْعِهِ ضَعْفٌ ، وَاللَّهُ يَغْفِرُ لَهُ ، فَجَاءَ عُمَرُ فَاسْتَحَالَتْ غَرْبًا ، فَمَلَأَ الْحِيَاضَ وَأَرْوَى الْوَارِدَةَ ; فَلَمْ أَرَ عَبْقَرِيًّا أَحْسَنَ نَزْعًا مِنْ عُمَرَ ، فَأَوَّلْتُ السُّودَ : الْعَرَبَ ، وَالْعُفْرَ : الْعَجَمَ " .

Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Last night (in a dream) I was drawing water when black and greyish sheep came to me. Then Abu Bakr came and drew one or two buckets, and there was weakness in his drawing; may Allah Almighty forgive him. Then Umar came, and it became a huge bucket; he filled the troughs and gave water to all who came. I have not seen anyone as diligent as Umar at drawing water. I interpreted this to mean that the black sheep are the Arabs and the greyish sheep are the non-Arabs ('Ajam)."

It is reported that Abu Wa'il said: "I never saw Umar except that there was an angel between his eyes guiding him aright."
