Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) transmits this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, whoever does not show mercy to people, Allah too does not show mercy to him."
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Atiyyah, that is al-Awfi, who is da'if (weak), though he has been declared trustworthy; its remaining narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

The people said: "O Messenger of Allah, all of us are merciful." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is meant is not that one of you shows mercy to his companions; rather, what is meant is mercy to people, mercy to all (or in general)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul, Allah Almighty places His mercy only upon one who is merciful." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is meant is not that one of you shows mercy to his companion; rather, what is meant is showing mercy to all people."

Abu Ya'la, and al-Tabarani in all three of his books, recorded it. The narrators of Abu Ya'la are the narrators of the Sahih, except that the narrator Abu Ubaydah did not hear from his father, so this narration is mursal.

Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Haydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever does not show mercy to people, Allah Almighty will not show mercy to him." Its chain contains a narrator, Zakariyya bin Abi Ubaydah, and there is weakness in him.
Sayyiduna al-Ash'ath bin Qays narrated: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever does not show mercy to the Muslims, Allah Almighty will not show mercy to him."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Some hadiths on this subject will come later in the chapter on repentance.
