Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever hears something from another person, and that person does not like it to be mentioned on his behalf, then it is a trust, even if (the speaker) did not ask him to keep it secret."
This narration was recorded by Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani; however, he recorded it thus: It is reported from Ubayd bin Umayr that once Abdullah bin Salman was sitting and said something. A man overheard what he said, and he did not like anyone to hear it. He turned to Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked: "Did you not hear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever says something and does not like it to be spread on his behalf, then it is a trust, even if the person concerned did not promise to keep it secret (or did not ask for it to be kept secret)'?" Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes. I know what you mean." Then he turned to that man and said: "Do not mention this matter." The chain of Imam Ahmad and one of the two chains of Imam al-Tabarani contain a narrator, Ubaydullah bin al-Walid al-Wassafi, who is matruk (abandoned), while the other chain contains a narrator, Dirar bin Surad, who is matruk (abandoned).
