Muhammad bin Sirin narrates: When Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to appoint Yazid as his successor, he wrote to the governor of Madinah: Send to me as a delegation whomever you wish. The narrator says: So Sayyiduna Amr bin Hazm al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) went to him with the delegation and sought permission to enter. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah's (may Allah be pleased with him) doorkeeper came and told him that Sayyiduna Amr bin Hazm (may Allah be pleased with him) was seeking permission to come in. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What does he want from me? The doorkeeper said: O Commander of the Believers, he has come seeking your kindness. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you are telling the truth, then write down for him whatever he wants and give him whatever he wants, but let me not see him. The doorkeeper went out to him and said: What do you need? Whatever you want, I will write it down. He said: Subhan Allah! I have come to the door of the Commander of the Believers; am I not to be allowed to meet him? I wish to meet him and speak with him. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the doorkeeper: Fix such-and-such a day with him, that he should come after the Fajr prayer. The narrator says: On that particular day, when Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) had offered the morning prayer, a couch was placed in his hall at his order, and the people were sent out from his presence. At that time there was nothing with him except a chair, and it had been placed for Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and sought permission to enter; Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him permission. Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) greeted him with salam and then sat on the chair. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: What do you need? He praised and glorified Allah Almighty and then said: "By my life! The son of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) is now in such a state that he has the best lineage among Quraysh, he has no need of kingship, and every kind of good is his. And I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'When a servant is made guardian over subjects, he will be called to account about those subjects: what course did he take with them?' So, O Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah! I remind you of Allah concerning the Ummah of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), with regard to the person you appoint as guardian over this Ummah." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) breathed heavily and kept breathing heavily for a while; then he wiped the sweat from his face three times. Then, when he had recovered, he praised and glorified Allah Almighty and said: To proceed: You are a man who gives sincere counsel, and you have expressed your opinion fully. Now only my son and their sons are left, and my son has more right than their sons. Do you need anything else? He replied: I need nothing else. The narrator says: His brother said to him: Did we travel from Madinah only for these few words? He said: We came only for this. The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered gifts to be given to them. The narrator says: The like of it was brought out for Sayyiduna Amr.
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Al-Haytham bin Adi narrates: Sulayman bin Surad died in the year sixty-five AH. Muhammad bin Ali al-Madini says: It has reached me that Sulayman bin Surad al-Khuza'i and al-Musayyab bin Najabah al-Fazari set out with an army of four thousand and camped at al-Nukhaylah. They were seeking revenge for the blood of Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sulayman bin Surad was their commander. This was around the new moon of Rabi' al-Thani, sixty-five AH. Then they set out towards Ubaydullah bin Ziyad and met his vanguard. They fought one another, and Sulayman bin Surad and al-Musayyab were killed at the beginning of Rabi' al-Thani.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain is munqati' (disconnected).

Muhammad bin Sa'id bin Rummanah narrates: When the time of death drew near for Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said to Yazid bin Mu'awiyah: I have brought the lands under your control and made the people bound to you. My only fear concerning you is from the people of the Hijaz. If you see any suspicious situation from them, send Muslim bin Uqbah al-Murri against them, for I have tested him more than once, and I have not found anyone like him in obedience and sincere loyalty. The narrator says: When Yazid learned of the opposition of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) and how he was calling people to his own rule, he summoned Muslim bin Uqbah al-Murri, who had been struck by paralysis. Yazid said: The Commander of the Believers enjoined me during his illness that if I saw any suspicious situation from the people of the Hijaz, I should send you against them, and I have now seen such a situation. Muslim bin Uqbah said: I am just as the Commander of the Believers thought; have the army prepared for me. The narrator says: Then he stayed in Madinah for three days and called the people to pledge allegiance to Yazid on the terms that they would be bound by the command of Yazid bin Mu'awiyah in every matter, in obedience to Allah Almighty and in disobedience. The people accepted this from him, except one man from Quraysh, whose mother was an umm walad, who did not accept it. He said to him: Are you pledging allegiance to Yazid on the terms that you are his slave in every state, in obedience to Allah and in disobedience? The man said: No! Rather, I will follow him only in obedience to Allah Almighty. He refused to accept this, and Muslim bin Uqbah had him killed. The man's mother swore an oath that if Allah Almighty gave her power over Muslim, whether Muslim was alive or dead at that time, she would burn him with fire. When Muslim bin Uqbah left Madinah, his illness grew severe and he died. Then the mother of that Qurashi man came with her slaves to Muslim's grave and ordered that Muslim's grave be dug open from the side of the head. When they reached Muslim's body, there was a snake there which had coiled itself around his neck and was sucking at his nose. The people were frightened and said: O our mistress! Go back, for Allah Almighty has sufficed you against this man's evil. They told the woman about the situation. The woman said: No, I will fulfil the promise I made to Allah Almighty. Then the woman said: Dig his grave open from the side of the feet. They dug the grave open, and a snake had wound itself around both his feet too. The narrator says: The woman stepped aside, offered two rak'ahs, and then prayed: O Allah! If You know that I was angry with Muslim bin Uqbah today only for Your sake, then clear the way between me and him. Then the woman took a stick and with it moved the snake's tail, whereupon it slipped out from behind his head and went out of the grave. Then the woman gave an order concerning Muslim, and his body was taken out of the grave and then burned with fire.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Abd al-Malik bin Abd al-Rahman al-Dhimari, whom Abu Zur'ah declared da'if (weak), while Ibn Hibban and others called him thiqah (trustworthy); and I do not know the person named Ibn Rummanah.

Abu Harun al-Abdi narrates: I saw Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), and the hair of his beard had fallen out. The narrator said: Do you play with your beard? He said: No! I suffered this at the hands of the oppressors from the people of Syria. In the time of the incident of al-Harrah they came into my house and looted all the goods and belongings in the house. Then another group came into the house and found nothing there. They were sorry that they would go back without taking anything, so they said: Lay this old man down! So they laid me down, and each one of them plucked hairs from my beard.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and the narrator Abu Harun is matruk (abandoned).

رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ جَمَاعَةٌ لَمْ أَعْرِفْهُمْ .
Iyad bin al-Walid narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) wrote to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the pledge of allegiance, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) refused to pledge allegiance to him. Yazid bin Mu'awiyah thought that he had refused on his account (that is, on account of Yazid bin Mu'awiyah), so Yazid wrote a letter to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) in which was written: (O Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both!) To proceed: It has reached me that the heretic Ibn al-Zubayr invited you to pledge allegiance to him so that he might bring you under his obedience, and you would become a helper of falsehood and a partner in sin; but you refused and held back your hand because, O People of the House, Allah Almighty placed in your heart the recognition of our right. So may Allah Almighty give you the best reward He gives to those who maintain the ties of kinship and fulfil their covenants. I may forget many things, but I will not forget your goodness, your upholding of kinship and your kindness; you are worthy of it by virtue of obedience, honour and kinship with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Look to those of your people who are around you, and to those who come to you from distant regions, whom Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) has bewitched with his tongue and his embellished, false talk, and draw them away from him, for compared with this heretic, this divisive renegade, the people are more obedient to you and listen to you more. Peace!
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) wrote to him (in reply): To proceed: Your letter has reached me, in which you mentioned that Ibn al-Zubayr invited me to what he invited me to, and that I refused him out of recognition of your right. Even if that were so, I would not hope for any kindness from you because of it; rather, Allah Almighty knows best my intention in this. You wrote to me that I should urge the people towards you and draw them away from Ibn al-Zubayr. That will not be! It is no cause for joy and no cause for good. Dust in your mouth, and stones for you! If your soul flatters you, you are one who has strayed far, and you are a lost and ruined man. As for what you wrote to me about hastening my goodness and kinship towards me: O man, keep your goodness and your kinship far (from me), for I too have withheld my love and my support from you. By my life, whatever you give from what is in your hand will be little, and you will hold back a great, long and broad portion of it. May you have no father! Do you think that I will forget that you had Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) and the young men of the family of Abd al-Muttalib martyred, who were lamps in the darkness and shining stars, and that by your order your horsemen desecrated their bodies? They lay on one plain, shrouded in blood, stripped of their belongings and left in the open, neither shrouded nor laid to rest; the winds kept blowing dust over them, wolves kept coming to them, and hyenas kept tearing at them, until Allah Almighty brought to them a people who had no share in shedding their blood, and they arranged their shrouding and burial. By Allah, Allah Almighty favoured you so that you are in the position you now hold. I can forget everything, but I cannot forget that you set over them a man of doubtful lineage, the son of a sinful adulteress, distant in kinship and base on his father's and mother's side; this is the man by claiming whom your father earned for himself shame, sin and disgrace in this world and the Hereafter. For the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The child belongs to the owner of the bed, and for the fornicator there is deprivation (or the stone)." Yet your father held that the child may be given to someone other than the owner of the bed, that no harm should come to the fornicator, and that his (illegitimate) child should be attached to him, just as the child of a harlot is attached to a righteous man. Thus your father killed the Sunnah out of ignorance and deliberately brought forth misguiding innovations. I can forget many things, but I cannot forget that you forced Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) to leave the sanctuary of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for the sanctuary of Allah Almighty, and then you sent your men and conspirators towards him, so that if the situation got out of hand you would deal with him. You kept doing this to him until you forced him to leave Makkah for the land of Kufah, where you had your horsemen and armies lying in wait for him as a lion lies in wait. All this was because of your enmity towards Allah Almighty, His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and his (that is, the Messenger's, peace and blessings be upon him) family. Then you wrote to Ibn Marjanah and ordered him to confront him with his horsemen and foot soldiers, with spears and swords, and then you also wrote to him to do it quickly and not delay, until you had him (that is, Sayyiduna Husayn, may Allah be pleased with him) killed, together with the young men of the children of Abd al-Muttalib who were with him, who belonged to a household from whom Allah Almighty had removed impurity and whom He had thoroughly purified. We too are like that, not like your foolish and harsh forefathers who had livers (that is, hearts) like those of donkeys. You know that he (that is, Sayyiduna Husayn, may Allah be pleased with him) was the most honoured of the people of al-Bat'ha, both in ancient times and in recent times. You people violated the sanctity of the two Sanctuaries and made killing lawful there, but he disliked becoming the one through whom the sanctity of the sanctuary of Allah Almighty, the sanctuary of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Sacred House would be harmed. Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) asked you to let him go and asked you to let him return, but you seized the opportunity of his few helpers and wiped out the members of his household as if you were killing the members of a household of the Turks or of Kabul. How can you find love for yourself from me, and how can you ask for my help, when you have killed the children of my father, drops of my blood are dripping from your sword, and you want my companionship? If Allah wills, my blood will not go to waste, and vengeance for it will surely be taken. And if vengeance for it cannot be taken, we will accept that the Prophets and the families of the Prophets were also martyred, and an account was demanded for their killing too. In any case, there is Allah Almighty's promise (that is, one day He will call everyone to account), and Allah Almighty suffices as a Helper of the oppressed and as One who takes vengeance on the oppressors. What is astonishing is that as long as you live, time will keep showing you astonishing things. The daughters of the family of Abd al-Muttalib and the little children of their family were carried to you in Syria so that you could show the people that you had overpowered us and humiliated us, when, by Allah, it is because of them and because of me that Allah Almighty showed favour to you, your father and your mother. By Allah, you spend your mornings and evenings safe from being wounded by my hands, but the wound you receive from my tongue, my fingertips (that is, my writing) and my undoing and binding (or silence) will keep growing. Fighting will not bring you success, and after your killing of the family of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Allah Almighty will give you only a little respite, until Allah Almighty seizes you with a painful seizing and takes you from this world in a state of being blameworthy and sinful. So, may you have no father, live as you please, but what you have committed has rendered you worthless before Allah Almighty. The narrator says: When Yazid read this letter, he said: Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was bent on evil.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain contains a group of narrators whom I do not know.

Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrates: When Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) held back from obeying Yazid bin Mu'awiyah and began openly to revile him. Yazid was informed of this, and he swore an oath that he would be brought to him in chains, or else he would send an army against him. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) was told: Let us do this: we will have shackles of silver made for you, over which you can wear your clothes, and in this way you will let him fulfil his oath, for making peace is more fitting for you. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Allah Almighty will not let him fulfil his oath. Then he recited this verse: "I will not soften towards a wrong thing asked of me until the stone softens for the molar of the one who chews." Then he said: By Allah, a blow of the sword in honour is dearer to me than a blow of the whip in humiliation. Then he claimed the caliphate for himself and openly opposed Yazid bin Mu'awiyah. Yazid bin Mu'awiyah sent Muslim bin Uqbah al-Murri against him with the army of the people of Syria and ordered him to fight the people of Madinah, and when he had finished with them, to go on to Makkah. The narrator says: When Muslim bin Uqbah entered Madinah, the remaining Companions who were still there left the place. Muslim bin Uqbah committed many outrages there and carried out a great deal of killing and plunder; then he left. At a certain place on the way he died. He appointed Husayn bin Numayr al-Kindi as his successor and said: O son of a donkey's saddle-cloth! Beware of the tricks of Quraysh, and deal with them only on the basis of weapons, then of plucking (the fruit). Husayn set out until he came to Makkah, and there he fought Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) for some days. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) had pitched a tent in the Mosque, in which women gave water to the wounded and treated them, prepared food for the hungry, and the wounded would come to them and take shelter. Husayn said: A lion keeps coming out at us from that tent, just as a lion comes out of its lair; so which of you will overpower him? A man from the people of Syria said: I will do it. When night grew dark, he placed a candle on the tip of his spear, spurred on his horse, and thrust the spear into the tent, and fire blazed up. In those days various kinds of cloths were draped over the Ka'bah, with a Yemeni mantle over them. The wind carried the fire to the Ka'bah and it began to burn, and because of that fire the two horns of the ram that was given as a ransom for Sayyiduna Ishaq (peace be upon him) were also burned. The narrator says: Meanwhile Husayn bin Numayr received news that Yazid bin Mu'awiyah had died, so he abandoned the fighting and went back. After the death of Yazid bin Mu'awiyah, Marwan bin al-Hakam claimed the caliphate for himself. The people of Hims accepted his call, and the people of Jordan and Palestine also accepted it. So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) sent al-Dahhak bin Qays al-Fihri against him with an army of one hundred thousand. The two armies met at Marj Rahit. At that time Marwan was with five thousand men of the Banu Umayyah, their freed slaves and their followers from the people of Syria. Marwan said to a slave of his called Kidah: Charge from whichever of the two flanks you wish. He said: How can I charge them when they are so many? Marwan said: Some of them have come under compulsion, and some have come for pay. May you have no mother! Charge them; a clear blow will be enough for you, and they will see to their own escape; these people are slaves of the dinar and the dirham. So Kidah charged them and routed them; al-Dahhak bin Qays was killed, and that army scattered. About this situation Zufar composed these verses: "By my life, the battle of Rahit has left for Marwan this situation: the slain lie far apart among us. Have you forgotten my weapon, may you have no father? I see that war only increases loss. Plants grow when the breast of the earth is split, but the loss of people (that is, their being killed) remains just as it was." He also said about it: "Is it right that Bahdal and the son of Bahdal should live, while Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) is killed? You lie! By the House of Allah, if you kill him, the day will not remain bright and shining, and then nobility among you will remain only as the ray of the sun is faint at the time of its setting." The narrator says: When Marwan died, Abd al-Malik claimed the caliphate; he stood up, and the people of Syria accepted his call. He gave a sermon on the pulpit and said: Which of you will overpower Ibn al-Zubayr? Al-Hajjaj said: O Commander of the Believers! I will do it. Abd al-Malik silenced him. Then the same happened again, and he silenced him again. Then the same happened, and al-Hajjaj said: O Commander of the Believers, I will do it, for I saw in a dream that I had taken off his cloak and put it on. So Abd al-Malik provided al-Hajjaj with an army so that he might reach Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) in Makkah and fight him there. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to the people of Makkah: Guard these two mountains, for you will remain in good condition and prevail as long as the enemy does not gain the upper hand over these two mountains. It was not long before al-Hajjaj and the men with him took control of the mountain of Abu Qubays. Al-Hajjaj had catapults set up on it, and he kept hurling projectiles with them; he kept bombarding Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) and the people with him in the Mosque with stones. On the morning of the day on which Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) was martyred, he came to his mother, Sayyidah Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her), who was then one hundred years old; not one of her teeth had fallen out, nor had her eyesight been affected. She asked her son: Abdullah, what is the state of the (enemy) army? He told her: They have reached such-and-such a place. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) laughed and said: There is rest in death. Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O my son! Perhaps you are wishing for it because of me. I do not wish to die until it comes to one of your two outcomes: if you become the ruler, my eyes will be cooled by it, and if you are martyred, I will hope for reward through you. The narrator says: Then he bade his mother farewell. Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) said to him: O my son! Beware of giving up anything of your religion out of fear of being killed. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) left her and entered the Mosque. He had placed two door-leaves over the Black Stone, and by means of them he protected it from being struck by the catapult projectiles. When Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) came, he was sitting by the Black Stone, and someone asked: Shall we open the door of the Ka'bah for you so that you can climb up and go inside it? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) looked at him and then said to him: You can protect your brother from everything, but you cannot protect him from death. Does the Ka'bah not have sanctity? Does this place not have that sanctity? By Allah, even if they found you clinging to the coverings of the Ka'bah, they would still kill you. He was asked: Then why do you not talk to them about making peace? He said: Is this a time for peace? By Allah, if they find you, they will slaughter all of you. He recited these verses: "I am not one to buy life at the price of disgrace, nor one to climb a ladder out of fear of death. I will contend with the arrow; it does not hold back, and I will meet death, whichever edge it aims for." Then he turned to the members of the family of Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) and, admonishing them, began to say: Let each one of you guard his sword as he guards his face, lest his sword break and he then have to ward off attacks on himself with his hand as if he were a woman. By Allah, whenever I have faced an advancing army, it was only in the front rank, and I have never felt the pain of a wound except when medicine was applied to it. The narrator says: While they were in this state, some people came in upon them from the direction of the gate of the Banu Jumah, and among them was a black man. He asked: Who are these people? He was told: These are people of Hims. He went to attack them, holding two swords. The first to face him was the black man; he struck him with his sword and wounded him. The black man said to him: Get away, O son of an adulteress! Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to him: Get away yourself, O son of Ham! Is Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) an adulteress? Then he drove those people out of the Mosque and came back, and found that some people had come in from the direction of the gate of the Banu Sahm. He asked: Who are these people? He was told: These are people of Jordan. He attacked them, reciting this verse: "I face an assault like a flood, whose dust will not settle until nightfall." He drove these people out of the Mosque too, and then some people came from the gate on the side of the Banu Makhzum. He attacked them, reciting this verse: "If my opponent were only one, I would have been enough for him." The narrator says: On the roof of the Mosque were some of his helpers, who were throwing bricks at the enemy. He attacked those enemies, and meanwhile a brick struck him on the parting of his hair and split open his head. He stopped and began to recite this verse: "We are not those whose wounds bleed on their heels; rather, the drops of blood drip on our feet." The narrator says: Then he fell, and two of his slaves bent over him, reciting this verse: "A servant who was defending (the religion of) his Lord, while himself seeking protection." The narrator says: Then his body was taken to the enemy, and he had his head cut off.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Abd al-Malik bin Abd al-Rahman al-Dhimari, whom Ibn Hibban and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Abu Zur'ah and others called him da'if (weak).

Ibn Sirin narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that whatever Ka'b had told us came true concerning me exactly as he had said, except his statement that a young man of the tribe of Thaqif would kill me, whereas his head is lying before me. By this Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) meant al-Mukhtar al-Thaqafi. Ibn Sirin says: He did not realise that Abu Muhammad had been kept in store for him; by this Ibn Sirin meant al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Ishaq bin Abi Ishaq narrates: I was present when Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) was killed; this was on the day he was killed in the Sacred Mosque. The enemy soldiers kept entering through the gates of the Mosque, and whenever some of them entered through any gate, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) would charge them alone until he forced them out. While he was doing this, one of the upper parapets of the Mosque came down and fell on his head and knocked him down, and he recited these verses: "Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Do not make me weep. Nothing is left but my lineage and my religion, and a sharp sword with which my right hand has grown supple."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain contains a group of narrators whom I do not know.

Abu Nawfal bin Abi Aqrab al-Aranji narrates: Al-Hajjaj crucified Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) on the mountain pass of Madinah in order to display it to Quraysh. When the people dispersed, they began to pass by him without stopping by him, until Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) passed by him; he stopped there and said: O Abu Khubayb! Peace be upon you. He said these words three times, and then said: I used to forbid you from this. He said these words three times too. You were one who fasted, who prayed, and who upheld the ties of kinship. Al-Hajjaj was informed of this saying of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), so he gave an order, and the body of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) was taken down and thrown into the graveyard of the Jews. Then al-Hajjaj sent a message to Sayyidah Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) to come to him. Her eyesight had gone, and she refused to come. Al-Hajjaj sent her a message: Either you come, or I will send to you someone who will drag you here by your hair. Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) said: No! By Allah, I will not come to you until you send to me someone who will drag me by my hair. Al-Hajjaj's messenger came to him and told him about this. He said to his servant: O boy, hand me my sandals! He handed him his sandals, and he got up and walked until he came to Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her). He said: Did you see how Allah Almighty dealt with His enemy? Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) said: My view of you is that you have ruined his world for him, and he has ruined your Hereafter for you. As for your taunting him with (being the son of) the woman of the two waistbands, that is true: I had two waistbands. With one waistband I used to tie up the food of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that ants would not reach it, and the other waistband was the one that is indispensable. And I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "In the tribe of Thaqif there will be one who sheds much blood and a great liar (that is, a false claimant to prophethood)." As for the great liar, we have already seen him (that is, al-Mukhtar al-Thaqafi), and as for the one who sheds much blood, that will be you. The narrator says: So al-Hajjaj left from there.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Abu al-Muhayyah, that is, al-Mukhtar, reports from his father, who said: I came to Makkah three days after Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) had been martyred. His mother, Sayyidah Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both), spoke with al-Hajjaj and said: Has the time not come for this rider to dismount (that is, for his body to be taken down from the cross)? Al-Hajjaj asked: The hypocrite's? Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) said: No! By Allah, he was not a hypocrite; rather, he was a man who fasted and offered voluntary prayers. Al-Hajjaj said: Be quiet! You are an old woman who talks nonsense. Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I have never spoken nonsense since I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: (The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:) "From the tribe of Thaqif will emerge a great liar (that is, a false claimant to prophethood) and one who sheds much blood." As for the great liar, we have seen him (meaning al-Mukhtar al-Thaqafi), and as for the one who sheds much blood, it means you. Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah adds in his narration: Al-Hajjaj said: I am the one who sheds the blood of the hypocrites.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; I do not know Abu al-Muhayyah or his father.

Al-Qasim bin Muhammad narrates: Sayyidah Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) came with her slave girls; her eyesight had gone. She asked: Where is al-Hajjaj? We said: He is not here. She said: Tell him to give the order for these bones (that is, the body of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with them both) to be given to us, for I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbid mutilation. The narrator says: We said: When he comes, we will tell him this. Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When he comes, tell him this too: that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "In the tribe of Thaqif there will emerge a great liar (that is, a false claimant to prophethood) and one who sheds much blood."

When the leaders of the Banu Umayyah saw this situation, and some people and notables of Syria saw it, among whom was Rawh bin Zinba' al-Judhami, they said to one another: The rule ought to remain among us, the people of Syria, and now it will pass to the people of the Hijaz; we will not be content with that.
