Muhammad bin Sirin narrates: When Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to appoint Yazid as his successor, he wrote to the governor of Madinah: Send to me as a delegation whomever you wish. The narrator says: So Sayyiduna Amr bin Hazm al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) went to him with the delegation and sought permission to enter. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah's (may Allah be pleased with him) doorkeeper came and told him that Sayyiduna Amr bin Hazm (may Allah be pleased with him) was seeking permission to come in. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What does he want from me? The doorkeeper said: O Commander of the Believers, he has come seeking your kindness. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you are telling the truth, then write down for him whatever he wants and give him whatever he wants, but let me not see him. The doorkeeper went out to him and said: What do you need? Whatever you want, I will write it down. He said: Subhan Allah! I have come to the door of the Commander of the Believers; am I not to be allowed to meet him? I wish to meet him and speak with him. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the doorkeeper: Fix such-and-such a day with him, that he should come after the Fajr prayer. The narrator says: On that particular day, when Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) had offered the morning prayer, a couch was placed in his hall at his order, and the people were sent out from his presence. At that time there was nothing with him except a chair, and it had been placed for Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and sought permission to enter; Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him permission. Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) greeted him with salam and then sat on the chair. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: What do you need? He praised and glorified Allah Almighty and then said: "By my life! The son of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) is now in such a state that he has the best lineage among Quraysh, he has no need of kingship, and every kind of good is his. And I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'When a servant is made guardian over subjects, he will be called to account about those subjects: what course did he take with them?' So, O Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah! I remind you of Allah concerning the Ummah of Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), with regard to the person you appoint as guardian over this Ummah." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) breathed heavily and kept breathing heavily for a while; then he wiped the sweat from his face three times. Then, when he had recovered, he praised and glorified Allah Almighty and said: To proceed: You are a man who gives sincere counsel, and you have expressed your opinion fully. Now only my son and their sons are left, and my son has more right than their sons. Do you need anything else? He replied: I need nothing else. The narrator says: His brother said to him: Did we travel from Madinah only for these few words? He said: We came only for this. The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered gifts to be given to them. The narrator says: The like of it was brought out for Sayyiduna Amr.
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
