Sayyiduna Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The promised Day means the Day of Resurrection; the witness (shahid) means Friday; that which is witnessed (mashhud) means the Day of Arafah. Allah Almighty has appointed Friday for us. And the middle prayer means the prayer after Asr."
Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Ayyash, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Imam Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates concerning this saying of Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty says: "By the witness and that which is witnessed." Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "'The witness' (shahid) is my grandfather, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and 'that which is witnessed' (mashhud) is the Day of Resurrection." Then he recited this verse: "Indeed, We have sent you as a witness (shahid), a bearer of glad tidings and a warner." And he recited this verse: "That is a Day on which mankind will be gathered, and that is a Day witnessed (mashhud)."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Yahya bin Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "The witness means Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and that which is witnessed means the Day of Resurrection."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
